The Lake Mills baseball team won its regular season finale 3-2 Thursday over North Iowa.

Lake Mills head coach Jason Blaser said he was impressed with his squad’s defensive effort.

“Not scoring many runs puts a lot of pressure on our pitching staff, but they’ve been unbelievable,” he said.

Taylor Throne earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs. He struck out three batters and allowed two walks. Paul Scholbrock also pitched for Lake Mills. He struck out two batters and didn’t allow any earned runs in four innings.

Second baseman Lincoln Boehmer came up with a diving grab to help preserve the win, Blaser added.

In the sixth inning, the Bulldogs gave up only one run after the bases were loaded with no outs.

“That’s a huge motivator,” Blaser said. “We know we can be put in adverse situations and get out of them.”

Throne and Peters led the Bulldogs at the plate with two hits each. One of Peters’ hits was a double, and he scored two runs and had a stolen base.

“We were hitting the ball, and hitting it hard, Blaser said. “We had eight hits.”

The Bulldogs head into district play with a record of 14-13. Lake Mills had two five-game winning streaks early in the season.

The victory gave the Bulldogs the season sweep over the Bison. Lake Mills also beat North Iowa 1-0 on June 17.

Next, Lake Mills will play Ackley-Geneva-Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock in the first round of the Class 1A District 4 tournament at North Butler.

AGWSR has lost 14 of its last 16 games.

In the second round of the tournament, Lake Mills or AGWSR will play North Butler or Clarksville at North Butler at 7 p.m. Thursday.
