NORTHWOOD — A 26-year-old Northwood man pleaded not guilty Monday to a stabbing from June.

Donald Monte Baker is accused of stabbing Bennie Montgomery, 28, and Valerie Merrideth, 26, both of Northwood, on June 5 after an altercation at the Schoolside Apartments, 607 Seventh St. N.

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office responded to the apartments after receiving a 911 call of a fight in progress.

When deputies arrived at the apartments, they found Montgomery sitting on a curb with stab wounds and were reportedly directed to another apartment, where they found Baker.

The court complaint stated Baker reportedly admitted to police that he had stabbed Montgomery with a knife that he had retrieved from the kitchen of Apartment 6.

Worth County Sheriff Jay Langenbau said in a previous interview there had been ongoing trouble between the men that intensified.

Montgomery was flown by Mercy Air Med to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City for injuries, while Merrideth drove herself to Mercy, where she was treated and released for less severe stab wounds, according to reports.

Baker’s trial date has not been determined.
