The Albert Lea Police Department is warning area residents of a potential telephone scam.

Police have received several complaints about a phone survey that is said to be done by Verizon phone service. The person on the other end of the phone is asking for partial Social Security numbers, mother’s maiden names and other identifying information.

“If you receive a call like this, hang up,and if you do talk with the person on the other end of the line do not give out any personal information,” a news release stated. “This could lead to your identity being stolen and cause financial difficulties.”

Even residents on the “Do Not Call List” have been receiving calls.

One of the phone numbers mentioned has been 800-331-0500 but other numbers may have also been used, the release stated.
