Prepare for traffic delays on Interstate 35

Motorists will encounter single-lane traffic in both directions of Interstate 35 between the Straight River Rest Area and Faribault beginning Monday as crews begin a resurfacing project, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The following ramp closures will also be in effect for up to three days at a time throughout the project:

• Steele County Road 34 (26th Street in Owatonna)

• Steele County Road 9 (Clinton Falls)

MnDOT anticipates periods of stop-and-go traffic in each direction before the construction zone due to heavy traffic volumes, especially on Friday and Sunday evenings. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes and avoid the area during peak travel times, if possible.

During backups, motorists should use both lanes and take turns merging into the construction zone, where single-lane traffic begins. This method reduces rear-end crashes and helps keep traffic flowing as best as possible.

When the project is complete, motorists will experience a smoother ride surface and a safer highway.

Crane Creek Asphalt, a division of Mathy Construction, is the prime contractor for the $11 million project, expected to be completed in late October.

MnDOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
