Franken in Minnesota talks health care, mental health

ST. PAUL — Senator Al Franken is making several Twin Cities stops where he’ll be talking health care and criminal justice issues.

The Democratic senator holds a state Capitol news conference this morning to tout a provision of President Obama’s health care overhaul that he helped shape. The “medical loss ratio” requires insurers to spend at least 80 percent of premiums on actual health care, and requires them to rebate the difference to customers.

In the afternoon, Franken will meet with law enforcement officials and mental health experts at the Columbia Heights Police Station to discuss how the criminal justice system can deal with mentally ill people who commit crimes. Franken is sponsoring legislation to provide more funds for courts, law enforcement and correctional facilities to address mental health issues.
