Gladys Weyrum

Gladys Weyrum

Gladys Weyrum was born on Nov. 8, 1909, in Raymond, to Henry and (Schmidt) Boettcher. She was united in marriage to Arndt Weyrum on Nov. 23, 1928, in Alden. They lived in Racine, Wis., and Scarville, Iowa, before returning to Alden. From 1949 to 1966 Gladys and Arndt operated a filling service station in Alden. Through the years Gladys kept herself very busy with volunteer work, having been a member of many of the local groups and organizations and spending her time helping others in need. She was very proud of giving blood. It’s a wonder how many meals on wheels she delivered, utility bags she had sewn and rides given as local “taxi service” when she still drove! She was nominated the Freeborn County volunteer in 2001. Gladys cared for her sister who suffered from arthritis and was mostly bed ridden until her death in 1984. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and solving crosswords. Gladys was a member of Alden Senior Citizens and Redeemer Lutheran Church where she was active in Altar Guild. Gladys definitely had a mind of her own. “Don’t you know” and “Don’t worry yourself” were phrases the people who knew her heard more than once and her sharp-as-a-tack conversations will be missed.
