MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota is about to open its first new dorm in Minneapolis in more than a decade, a six-story residence hall that will include a public restaurant.

The 17th Avenue Residence Hall will house about 600 students. The first students are scheduled to move in today.

The amenities include a computer lab and sturdy lounges with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of the downtown skyline. The building has eco-friendly tables made of recycled corn and soy products, and a “green roof” uses plants to filter rainwater.

Staffers predict the restaurant will be a crowd favorite. The Fresh Food Company doubles as a dining hall and public restaurant. Chefs will prepare fresh food made to order, and there’s also a gluten-free zone.
