Minntac worker hurt in electrical accident

MOUNTAIN IRON — A Minntac worker is hospitalized with serious injuries after an electrical accident at the taconite plant in Mountain Iron.
Jon Malek, 52, of Tower was hurt in a small explosion that happened Wednesday while he was working on an electrical apparatus.
Malek’s wife said her husband is in stable condition at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
Theresa Malek said her husband has worked at the plant for about 17 years.
Authorities said a 911 call came in just before 8 a.m. that one person had been injured in an electrical explosion. Operations were suspended at Iron Range’s largest iron ore operation.
