Alice Meier, 95, Austin

Alice J. Meier, 95, of Austin, died on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home. Alice Jennevieve Schultz was born April 21, 1918, in Sargeant Township, Mower County, to Fred and Maggie (Gunderson) Schultz. On Sept.25, 1935, Alice married Lloyd H. Meier in rural Waltham.

Alice and Lloyd were married for 27 years before Lloyd’s death on Feb. 21, 1963. Over the years, the couple made their home on the farm near Dexter, then in Grand Meadow and Austin. Alice was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and had a strong affiliation with Crane Chapel in Austin.  She was very active in church activities. Later, she enjoyed watching televised services from First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea and listening to radio broadcasts of St. Olaf Lutheran Church services in Austin. Alice was an excellent seamstress and was involved in PTA while her daughters were in school. It was very important to her to be involved in the activities of her family. Alice enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and keeping up on world news.

Survivors include her daughters Lois (Emerson) Baumgartner of Austin, Marilyn Olson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Janice (Jim) Beach of Freeborn; five grandchildren Linda (Bruce) Halverson of Owatonna, Janet (Greg) Chladek of Clayton, Wis., Michael Baumgartner of Sacramento, Calif., Lori (John) Dodds of Owatonna and Brenda (Brian) Lage Olson of Gladbrook, Iowa; 14 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Archie Schultz of Brownsdale; and her dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Maggie Schultz; husband, Lloyd Meier; sister, Fern Laite; brother-in-law, Floyd Laite; and son-in-law, Lyle Olson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 2 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with the Rev. Dale Christiansen of Crane Chapel officiating. The family will greet friends a half hour prior to the service at Worlein Funeral Home.  Private interment was held Oct. 16 at Grandview Cemetery, Austin. Services were prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
