The Lake Mills wrestling team beat West Fork 60-24 and Belmond-Klemme 42-39 at a triangular Thursday in Rockwell.

The Bulldogs beat West Fork first with five pins and five forfeits. All seven contested matches ended in the first period. Lake Mills head coach Alex Brandenburg said he’d never seen that before as a head coach. He’s been a wrestling coach for 10 years and is in his sixth season with the Bulldogs.

Brady Schmidt earned Lake Mills’ fastest fall by pinning Austin Steil in 36 seconds.

Against Belmond-Klemme, the Bulldogs earned a North Iowa Conference win. Both teams won seven bouts, and every match but one ended in a fall. Krister Beal of Lake Mills lost by an 8-4 decision instead of a pin to give the Bulldogs the edge.

Schmidt and Noah Irons won by fall, and Max Bergo, Scott Wogen, Slade Sifuentes, Andrew Olsen and Ethan Evans won by forfeit.

“We matched up terribly against Belmond-Klemme,” Brandenburg said. “We had to be creative with where we weighed kids in and wrestled them.”
