Albert Lea firefighter Chris Harveaux rescues Lt. Al Schallock during an ice and water rescue training Tuesday near the Hatch Bridge. Fire Capt. Lee DeVries estimated the ice was about 2 inches thick. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recommends people stay off of ice 2 inches or thinner. Ice should be 4 inches thick before people walk on it and between 8 and 12 inches thick for a car or small pickup to drive on it. — Sarah Stultz/Albert Lea Tribune
