Pauline Annabelle (Overland) Noland of Hayward died peacefully at St. John’s Lutheran Community on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 4 at Hayward Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Katie Fick will officiate and interment will be at the Hayward Cemetery following the service. Polly was born Sept.17, 1915, to Peter and Inetta (Still) Overland in Hillsboro, N.D. She was baptized in the Methodist Church in Lisbon, N.D., on June 12, 1916, and became a member of the church on Easter Sunday 1926. Polly had one brother, Alan E. Overland of Auburn, Wash.

Polly grew up in Lisbon where her father managed the local grain elevator and her mother owned Aunt Netties Coffee Shop. She attended grade school and high school in Lisbon and graduated as the class salutatorian in 1932. She was offered a four-year college scholarship but was unable to attend due to the Great Depression. She got a job as a telephone operator in Lisbon and also worked as a waitress at her mother’s coffee shop. At age 23 she moved to Minneapolis and worked as a receptionist and telephone operator for Midland Co.

While working at Midland she met Max Noland. They were married Aug. 3, 1940. Max and Polly lived in Minneapolis until 1944 and then moved to Hayward to work on the Noland farm. Next they moved to Park River, N.D., where Max worked as a potato buyer for a Chicago firm. In 1949 they returned to Hayward to raise their three children and farm again in partnership with Max’s brother, Virgil.

Polly and Max joined Hayward Lutheran Church where Polly was very active in the church for many years. In addition to serving on numerous boards and committees, Polly taught Sunday school and was a member of Hayward Ladies Aid, Rebecca Circle and Altar Guild. Polly was a charter member of the St. John’s Lutheran Home Auxiliary.

She had many friends, and at age 60 began hand sewing quilts and wall hangings for many including her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling throughout America, Europe and especially loved camping in Mexico with Max throughout the 1960s. Throughout her life, she enjoyed caring for small pets and was an avid reader of mysteries and Reader’s Digest. Polly loved historical novels and geography, and she always had the world atlas handy to look up places she had read about. After Max died, she spent many winters in California with her childhood friend, Helen.

After Max died in 1976 Polly continued to live in Hayward until 2011, at which time she moved to The Brooks in Owatonna. In August 2013 she moved to St. John’s Lutheran Community in Albert Lea.

Polly is survived by her three children Kay (Alan) Smith of Apple Valley, Joan (Tom) Novak of Homosassa, Fla., and Jerry (Bev) Noland of Hayward. Her grandchildren include Jamie (Barb) Novak of Salinas, Calif., Jennifer Beck of Runnells, Iowa, Chris (Kristin) Novak of Solana Beach, Calif., Melissa (Joe) Jens of Fredonia, Wis., Mac (Jenny) Noland of Apple Valley, Patrick (Jessica) Noland of Minneapolis and Brock (Brianna) Noland of Minneapolis. Her great-grandchildren include Sara Novak, Alicia Swenson, Caressa, Tyrsa and Nolan Beck, McKenna, William and Wyatt Jens and Cam and Chase Noland; her great-great-grandchildren include Landon and Carmine Swenson, Scarlett and Audrey Perkins and Gavin Hollingshead.

She was preceded in death by her parents Peter Overland in 1962 and Inetta in 1968; her brother, Alan E. Overland, in 1984; and her husband, Max, in 1976.
