Tigers fall to KoMets

The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team’s halftime deficit was too big to climb out of Saturday at Kasson-Mantorville.

The Tigers outscored the KoMets 37-29 in the second half but lost 81-64.

Albert Lea was led by senior guard Sydney Rehnelt’s double-double. She scored 24 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added a pair of assists and a steal. She shot 57 percent from beyond the arc, hitting four 3-pointers. Fellow senior guard, Bryn Woodside, added 19 points shooting a team-high 38 percent from the field. She also had two rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Albert Lea forced 17 Kasson-Mantorville turnovers, including 13 steals. Megan Kortan and Woodside tied with a team-high four steals.

The KoMets had six fewer steals, but the Tigers had four more turnovers. Kasson-Mantorville had the edge in rebounding 31-29.

The Tigers shot higher field goal, 3-point and free throw percentages than the KoMets, but Kasson-Mantorville managed to get to the charity stripe 31 times compared to 13 for Albert Lea. The Tigers shot 85 percent from the free throw line.

Kasson-Mantorville improved its overall record to 4-1. Albert Lea fell to 1-1. The Tigers won their home opener 59-53 over Northfield on Dec. 3.

Next, the Tigers play their first Big Nine Conference game of the season at Austin at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Austin is 2-1. The Packers are coming off a 52-45 home win against Northfield on Saturday. Austin’s loss came at home against Red Wing.
