Albert Lea girls fall against Winona

The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team lost 71-54 against Winona Friday at home.
The Tigers trailed by six points at halftime, but the Winhawks extended their lead to double digits by the end of regulation.
Albert Lea’s big three accounted for 89 percent of the team’s offensive production: Bryn Woodside led the Tigers with 18 points, Megan Kortan scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds and Sydney Rehnelt scored 16 points and added a team-high two assists.
“Bryn played tough defense, and Megan hit the boards hard,” said Albert Lea head coach Lindsey Hugstad-Vaa.
The Tigers hope the loss knocked off the rust after two practices were canceled last week.
Winona won the rebounding battle 23-18 and was 17 of 22 from the free-throw line, while Albert Lea as 8 of 14.
Winona’s Hallee Hoeppner scored a game-high 36 points.
The loss comes on the heels of the Tigers third win of the season. After Saturday’s game at Rochester John Marshall, Albert Lea (3-7 overall, 2-5 Big Nine Conference) will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mankato East.
Mankato East (6-6 overall, 4-3 Big Nine Conference) is coming off a 42-32 win at New Ulm on Tuesday. Albert Lea is eighth in the conference standings, and Mankato East is fifth. Owatonna (6-0 overall, 12-0 Big Nine Conference) is the only team that’s undefeated in the conference. Faribault is last in the Big Nine standings. The Falcons are 1-11 overall.
