Casper “Cap” Fredrick Cummings, 87, of Wells, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at church Thursday. The Rev. Thomas Niehaus will officiate and interment will be in St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery. Cap was born Aug. 23, 1926, to Del and Alta (Omundson) Cummings in Wells. He attended St. Casimir Catholic School and Wells High School. Cap served for three and a half years in the US Navy and was honorably discharged. On Jan. 27, 1949, he was united in marriage to Margaret (Evan) Hovland in Wells. Cap worked at Del Monte for 30 years as a “Blue Hat” mechanic. He was an active member of the VFW, American Legion and Wells Color Guard. Cap was also a founding member of the Wells Ambulance. He enjoyed bowling, camping, traveling and playing cards.
Cap is survived by a sister, Mary Rand of California; wife, Margaret, of Wells; eight children, Janice Hovland (William) Stermer of Sun City, Ariz., John Hovland of San Diego, Calif., Michael (Suzanne) Cummings of Wells, Susan (Donald) Grunzke of Alden, Sally (Al) Remington of Wells, Dennis Cummings of Sun City, Calif., Kenneth (Caryle) Cummings of Mankato and Cindy (Tedd) Grunzke of Cleveland; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Leonard, Edward, Patrick, Adelbert, Allen and Earl; sisters Cecelia, Helen, Irene and Joan; daughter, Mary Hovland McClellan; grandson, Anthony Cummings; and granddaughter, Melissa Cummings.
