ST. PAUL — New steps to shore up security at Minnesota’s Capitol and surrounding buildings are being discussed by lawmakers, administration officials and law enforcement.

The Advisory Committee on Capitol Security is narrowing down recommendations for closing security gaps. It meets Thursday.

The goal is to produce a report soon for delivery to state lawmakers. It is expected to include a call for more patrol officers. The committee has also been debating a standardized process for people with gun permits to more regularly declare their intentions to carry weapons in the building.

It’s possible that some elements could be enacted administratively, but major changes would likely require legislative approval.
