50 years ago – 1964

• The Faribault basketball team defeated Albert Lea 61-58 for the first time in 19 seasons. Tom Weaver of the Falcons had a game-high 25 points. The Tigers were led by Paul Nervig with 17 points and Tom Olson with 12.

• The Albert Lea wrestling team defeated Faribault 28-14. Winners for the Tigers were Mark Allen, Gary Neist, Frank Trejo, Ken Stencil, Neil Skaar, Jim Carroll, Tom Countryman and Mike Roberts.

• In double overtime, the Bricelyn basketball team defeated Alden 60-58. Tony Lund scored 26 points and Bob Leland, 14, for Bricelyn and Alden was led by Ross Schmidt with 13 points and Gary Newman, 11.

25 years ago – 1989

• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team won the consolation title in the Austin Moose Club hockey tournament when it scored a 4-1 victory over Lakeville. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Scott Diggins, 2, Chad Adams and John Savelkoul.

• Wells-Easton won the Wells High School boys’ basketball tournament and improved to 6-1 for the season after defeating Granada-Huntley-East Chain 38-35. Mike Swehla of Wells-Easton hit an 85-foot basket at the buzzer for the win. Wells-Easton was led by Gavin Burns with 18 points and 15 rebounds.

• The South Central boys’ basketball team, behind 27 points by Perry Goerish, defeated Minnesota Lake-Delavan 70-27.

• Melvin Newbern scored 27 points and Jim Shikenjanski, 14, for the Minnesota Gophers in their 75-67 win over Wisconsin.

10 years ago – 2004

• Danielle Rankin scored 16 points for the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team in its 46-41 loss to the Northfield Raiders.

• The NRHEG girls’ basketball team defeated Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 54-47. NRHEG was led by Alison Anderson with 17 points and 3 steals; Erin Anderson with 12 points, 14 rebounds and three steals; and Emily Hagen with 14 points.

• Tessa Christensen scored five goals for the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team in its 8-1 victory over Waseca. The Tigers raised their Big Nine Conference record to 5-1-1.
