Tigers avenge loss to Falcons

The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team is riding momentum from the last five games.

The Tigers are 3-1-1 during that span and are winners of two straight.

After avenging a Dec. 5 loss to Owatonna with a 3-2 overtime win on Thursday, Albert Lea avenged another early-season loss Saturday with a 5-2 home win over Faribault.

In the first period, Albert Lea outshot Faribault 14-8, but the Falcons took a 1-0 lead 49 seconds into the period on a goal by Christian Von Ruden.

The Tigers fought back in the second period. Matt Cheever tied the game 1-1, and goals by Dalton Flatness and Van Zelenak gave Albert Lea a 3-1 lead headed into the final period.

Faribault cut its deficit to one goal 10 minutes and 22 seconds into the third. Albert Lea countered with Zelenak’s second goal of the night 27 seconds later, and Andrew Thompson gave the Tigers breathing room by finding the net about a minute after Zelenak.

Albert Lea had 46 shots on goal; Faribault had 19. The Tigers had 20 shots on goal in the second period alone.

Lucas Peterson and Alex Claassen tied with a game-high two assists. Zelenak and Von Ruden tied with a game-high two goals.

Next, Albert Lea (8-7-1 overall, 5-4 Big Nine Conference) will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Rochester John Marshall.
