Tigers fall in 1st OT game of season

Sydney Overgaard caught fire in the offensive zone, but the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team was unable get past Rochester Mayo Saturday at home.
The Tigers went to overtime for the first time this season and lost to the Spartans 3-2.
After a scoreless first period, Albert Lea and Rochester Mayo each scored one goal in the second and third periods. The Spartans added a goal in overtime to seal the win.
Overgaard led the Tigers’ offense with two goals. Kenzie Waldemar led the team with two assists, and Anna Anderson was credited with one.
“Our power play generated a lot of quality shots and produced our two goals,” said Albert Lea head coach Laura Hillman. “It was rewarding to see our team connecting on our passes.”
Katie Schwarz led Albert Lea in the net with 34 saves. Rochester Mayo had 37 shots on goal; Albert Lea had 29.
“Katie came up with a lot of big saves,” Hillman said. “The goal in overtime went in off a bad bounce off a player’s skate.”
The game was Albert Lea’s Senior Night.
“We have four seniors who will be greatly missed,” Hillman said. “Anna Anderson, Sydney Overgaard, Sarah Savelkoul and Kenzie Waldemar provided us with positive leadership both on and off the ice.”
The loss evened the regular season series 1-1, because Albert Lea won 4-1 at Rochester Mayo on Dec. 19.
Out of eight teams in Section 1A, Albert Lea (7-17 overall, 5-12 Big Nine Conference) took the No. 6 seed. In the section quarterfinals, the Tigers will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Northfield, the No. 3 seed. Northfield (9-16 overall, 1-9 Missota Conference) defeated Albert Lea 4-3 in its season opener on Nov. 12. It was the Tigers’ third game of the season.
