Gerrit Hoogenraad, 1947-2014

Funeral services for Gerrit Hoogenraad, 67, of Albert Lea, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Community Chapel in Albert Lea. The Rev. Jeff Laeger-Hagemeister will officiate.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel.
Interment will be in the Freeborn Cemetery in Freeborn.
Gerrit died Saturday, April 12, 2014, at St. John’s Lutheran Community in Albert Lea.
Gerrit was born March 4, 1947, in Breda, Netherlands, the son of Aernout A. and Adriana P. (Hoogewerff) Hoogenraad. He immigrated to America in 1958 where he moved to Easton with his family. In 1961 he moved to Minnesota Lake. Gerrit became a naturalized citizen May 1, 1967. He graduated from Minnesota Lake High School in 1966, and then from Mankato State University and Gloucester Jr. College in New Jersey where he received a masters degree in political science.
Gerrit worked for many years with Cotter & Co., which later became True Value Hardware.
He is survived by his twin sister, Mary Kay (Ralph) Malakowsky of Hartland and sister Carla (Keith) Stern of Wells; brothers John (Chris) Hoogenraad of Plymouth, Karel (Mary) Hoogenraad of Hopkins, Ted (Delphine) Hoogenraad of North Mankato and Ad (Shirley) Hoogenraad of Overland Park, Kan., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; niece, Shelly Malakowsky; nephew, Justin Hoogenraad and great-nephew, Derek Malakowsky.
