Conger 4-H Club

The Conger 4-H Club met April 13 at the Conger Community Center. Megan Thorson from the Extension office was the guest to do a site assessment. The club T-shirts are available for anyone who ordered one. The livestock trip to TransOva and Blue Bunny will be April 18. Market sheep and goat weigh-ins are from 9 to 11 a.m. April 26 and May 10. Camp Patterson is coming up in June, and the club voted to give $10 scholarships to anyone who goes. The deadline for identifying livestock is May 15 for livestock that do not have a market weigh in. Megan talked about the new one-time member exemption for missed deadlines. Record judging will be done by age groups this year. The next meeting will be May 18 at the Conger Community Center.

 

Wa Tan Ye Service Club

President Dorothy called the meeting to order. Roll call was taken and there were six members present.

Alice Petersen read the minutes of the last meeting which was Feb. 3. There were no meetings in January or March because of the weather. Alice also gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved and placed on file. $31 was collected for the food shelf.

Three members went to the district convention in Cresco, Iowa. Plans were discussed for the convention in October. The club will be the hostess for that convention.

The meeting was adjourned. Delores Weller was the hostess. Our next meeting will be on May 5.

 

Ascension Lutheran Women of ELCA

The Ascension Lutheran Women of ELCA held their regular monthly meeting at 9:25 a.m. April 13.

Doris Guenther opened the business meeting with discussion on blinds for Fellowship Hall. Don Hauge was present representing the Church Council. Alice Jensen and Cheryl Venem had contacted three different supplies. They presented the recommendation for electrical roller shades. Don Hauge will take the recommendation to church council.

Doris Guenther announced that the guest night has been set for Aug. 12 with the program to be provided by the Andrew Sisters from Austin. Doris will be in touch with Jane Pearson, the leader of calling for salad supper. Invitations will be discussed at the June meeting and sent out after the meeting.

Bishop Steven H. Delzer joined the group. He spoke of his travels and journeys as Bishop traveling over 17,000 miles by car and over 50,000 miles by air. He briefly touched on his trips to Tanzania, Columbia, Chicago and Germany.

The books for confirmation students, “The Lutheran Handbook,” were displayed.

A thank you was read from Lutheran Campus Ministry Crossroads at Mankato State University, and another thank you was read from Good Earth Village for gifts provided.

Joan Anderson, Mission in Growth, reported that she had communicated with Monica, who has now moved to Mobile, Ala.

The Bazaar Committee, Caroline Sorenson and Kay Boyken asked for suggestions.

There are eight graduates and Alice Jensen reported that the quilting group has two quilts left to tie.

The interchange new letter, which comes out six times a year, is available from the bulletin board for all to use.

Shoeboxes from the U.S. alone totaled over 7 million to different countries. There are also 112 other countries that prepare shoeboxes.

Bible Study Transforming Life and Faith will be the last Saturday in June at Good Earth Village.

The next monthly meeting will be at 9:25 a.m. June 8.

 

American Legion Auxiliary 

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 56 of Albert Lea met at 7 p.m. April 2 in the club dining room. The usual ceremonies were held. Secretary Vonnie Oftedahl took attendance and gave the secretary’s report. Treasurer Deanne Adams gave her report. The reports were approved.

A memorial service was held for the group’s seven deceased members this past year.

Committee reports were given. Children and Youth Chairwoman Karen Cibert reported that 330 Milk Moola, 1,072 box tops for education, 260 Labels for Education and 10.6 pounds of pop tabs were collected this year. Prizes were won by persons guessing closest to the correct number. Remember to keep collecting these items and turn them into the Legion Club. National Security Chairwoman Betty Anderson had two boxes of coupons ready to ship out to troops. Please continue to save coupons and bring to the club. Also bring in cancelled commemorative stamps, soaps and shampoos from hotels and phone cards for veterans in veteran hospitals. Poppy Chairwoman Audrey Johannsen announced Poppy Days will be May 15 and 16. Those that can help for a couple of hours on those days should call Audrey at 507-373-9809.

The district convention will be May 17 in Austin and the department convention will be July 17-19 in Rochester. Delegates elected are Bonnie Schneider, Maureen Steihl, Vonnie Oftedahl, Deanne Adams, Jenny Torgerson, Ange Larson, Diane Schaunce, Karen Cibert, Carol Smith and Joyce Olson.

Recommendations from the board that were voted on and passed were donations to Commander’s Project, the historical museum, Legionville, district president projects, Albert Lea firefighters, district and department delegates’ expenses and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon.

The quarter drawing was won by Betty Anderson. Karen Cibert, children and youth chairman, served lunch.

The meeting was closed with the singing of “God Bless America.” Prayer was given by President Bonnie.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. June 4 in the club dining room. Continuous year members will be recognized.

 

Central-East Freeborn Lutheran Men in Mission

A soups and trimmings meal was served at 6 p.m. April 1 at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church. Wayne Indrelic was the soup chef with 38 people enjoying his fixings.

The meal was followed by a Harley program with Floyd Baird, former city official in Sturgis, S.D., as the presenter. He gave many stories having to do with the Sturgis rally. One example was the Iowa family in a Winnebago where the kids were enjoying the scenery while Mom and Dad  suffered the two-hour off and back on the freeway.

The program was followed by an ice cream add-your-own topping all-you-want dessert bar.

Door prize winners were Brian Thompson, who won a bright green Harley T-shirt, and Bev Indrelic, who won a Harley ladies’ denim shirt.
