Weekend Planner: Sewers set to darn all day long

Area residents with a passion for sewing are invited to attend the annual Community Sew Day on Saturday.

The event, which is part of local Shinefest activities, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Senior Center of the Skyline Plaza.

All items made will be given away to those in need.

Sewing kits for quilts, dresses and personal care bags will be provided, but participants are asked to bring sewing machines, scissors, pins and a sack lunch.

Participants are invited to come all day of for however long they can sew. Beverages and cookies will be provided. For questions, contact 383-8977.

The following are some of the other events happening this weekend:

 

Friday

• Albert Lea High School students will present “You Can’t Take it With You” at 7 p.m. in the high school’s auditorium.

• A fish fry will be at the Albert Lea Eagles Club with entertainment by Rich Honstad.

• A prime rib, steak, chicken shrimp and all-you-can-eat fish fry will be at the Albert Lea Moose Lodge. There will be ’60s, ’70s and ’80s music.

 

Saturday

• Community Sew Day 2014 will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Senior Center of the Skyline Plaza.

• Picturing a Cure will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Northwood-Kensett Elementary School.

• The Albert Lea Moose Lodge will install its officers starting at 4 p.m. Entertainment by Megaforce with karaoke will follow at 7 p.m.

• The Albert Lea Eagles Club, 205 W. William St., will host its club anniversary with a state president visit, the Eagle of the Year award and a dinner. Entertainment will be provided by Full House.

• The Southern Gateway chapter of Minnesota Deer Hunters Association will host a basket night and gun raffle fundraiser at the Albert Lea American Legion. Baskets are available from 5 to 8 p.m. for $8.

• Albert Lea High School students will present “You Can’t Take it With You” at 7 p.m. in the high school’s auditorium.

• The Duttons Family Show will be at 7 p.m. in the Alden-Conger High School gym. Tickets for reserved seats are $25; general admission is $20 and children 12 and under are $10.

• The Geneva Fire Department will host its annual ham bingo at 7:30 p.m. at the Geneva Community Center. Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the area food shelf. Proceeds will go to help offset the cost of new air packs.

• The All BS Band will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight at America’s Best Value Inn. Admission is free.

 

Sunday

• The Conger volunteer fire department will host a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Conger Community Center. Menu includes eggs, pancakes, french toast,  sausage, milk and orange juice.

Cost is $5 for children 6 to 12 and $7 for adults.

• American Legion Post 56 will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 142 N. Broadway. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, potatoes, scrambled eggs, juice and coffee. Cost is $7.

• An open house will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center for the new Birds & Buds exhibit.

• Local author and dietitian Amy Pleimling will have a book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. at Book World in Northbridge Mall. Pleimling wrote “Don’t Yuck My Yum.”

Also at the book signing will be Jody Cross who authored “Leaders Speak.”
