MANKATO — The family of a former Minnesota State, Mankato, linebacker who was hospitalized following an alleged altercation with another high profile athlete described him as strong and determined.
Isaac Dallas Kolstad, of Mankato, was listed in critical condition Monday at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.
Former Minnesota Gophers quarterback Philip Robert Nelson was jailed following the alleged altercation in Mankato early Sunday.
Police said officers came across the 24-year-old Kolstad while patrolling around 2 a.m. The 20-year-old Nelson was arrested at the scene.
A report said police are requesting felony charges of third-degree assault.
The family’s statement released Sunday through the hospital also said they were grateful for the outpouring of support.
Nelson left the Gophers in January to transfer to Rutgers, which is moving to the Big Ten next season.
