A 20-year-old Albert Lea man was sentenced to two years of probation on Thursday for starting a crib on fire last June in his parent’s home.
Omar Rodriguez received credit for 123 days already spent in the Freeborn County jail. If he violates his probation, he faces up to 242 additional days in jail.
The sentence came after Rodriguez in March pleaded guilty to one count of starting a negligent fire, a gross misdemeanor. He initially faced additional charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and domestic assault.
Court documents state Rodriguez reportedly told police he started a fire in the crib in the master bedroom of the house, at 635 E. Sixth St. An officer found a charred crib, a large plastic toy melted, scorch marks on the west wall, a partially burned crib mattress and black debris on the wood floor.
Officials found a small hand torch in a second floor bedroom.
Rodriguez was also accused of chasing his brother with butcher knives and at one point allegedly threw them.
As part of the sentence, Freeborn County District Court Judge Steve Schwab ordered Rodriguez to complete 40 hours of Sentence to Service and undergo a mental health and chemical dependency evaluation.
