ST. PAUL  — Minnesota’s legislative auditor said he’ll review psychiatric research practices at the University of Minnesota 10 years after the controversial death of a schizophrenic patient involved in a drug trial.

Legislative Auditor James Nobles has declined to investigate the death in the past. But, after recent pressure from Minnesota lawmakers, former Gov. Arne Carlson, the Public Citizen advocacy group and others, Nobles said Wednesday he will launch a “preliminary review” of the university’s psychiatric research and the drug trial in which Dan Markingson was enrolled when he committed suicide in May 2004.

Reports said a review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found no fault with the university or the physician who recruited Markingson into the study at the same time he was advising a court on whether Markingson should be committed.
