BARNESVILLE — A 9-year-old girl walked into a police station in western Minnesota and calmly informed officers that her parents were growing marijuana under the house.
She told officers she wanted help because the smell of pot smoke made her sick, and she was worried her dogs would get sick too.
The girl said her parents also sell drugs in addition to smoking them.
“She was a very brave, very smart, very articulate little girl,” officer Ryan Beattie said. “It was almost like interviewing an adult. She appeared to have intelligence far above a normal little girl, (and) she gave some pretty specific information about things, like types of drug paraphernalia, that no young person ought to have knowledge about.”
Police searched the home and found seven marijuana plants growing under the house. They also found drug equipment and a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Charges haven’t been filed pending the result of lab analyses on the plants and drug, Beattie said.
The child is now staying with her grandparents.
