MANKATO — Hundreds of people helped raise funds for a former Minnesota State, Mankato football player critically injured in an assault.
A crowd estimated at 700 came to the MNUM Fieldhouse Sunday night to help defray the rising medical costs for Isaac Kolstad. The university’s football staff and Kolstad’s aunts set up the event, which raised about $13,000.
The 24-year-old Kolstad suffered a brutal beating outside a bar in Mankato in mid-May. Prosecutors have charged former Minnesota quarterback Philip Nelson, of Mankato, and Trevor Shelley, of St. Peter, with assaulting Kolstad.
Reports said the funds will help Kolstad, his wife and young daughter. Kolstad’s wife, Molly, is due to give birth to the couple’s second child this month.
