ST. PAUL — More uniformed security personnel are being hired to help keep watch on the state Capitol and nearby buildings.
An advisory task force on Capitol security heard Wednesday that four additional state troopers and as many as two dozen trained security officers will be hired now that the Legislature has increased the security budget.
State Patrol Capt. Shelly Schrofer said the four trooper hires will be made soon and the other uniformed officers will be brought on as training schedules allow.
Lawmakers approved the security measure but decided against changing laws related to guns. Members of the public who are licensed to carry firearms can bring them to the Capitol as long as they give notification of their intent to do so at some point.
