50 years ago: 1964
• In the City Women’s Softball League, the Moose defeated the Rockets 15-12. Gussie Cram picked up the win, and Pat Brooks homered and tripled for the Moose.
• Albert Lea Federal shut out the Eagles 13-0 in the City Slow-pitch League. Winning pitcher Dick Hassler allowed only two hits. Dan Kruse and Claire Friday hit home runs for Federal.
• In Church League softball, Conger defeated Grace Lutheran 5-1 with Ken Heine as the winning pitcher. Milford Bohonek and Lowell Doppelhammer homered for Conger. Zion Lutheran topped Trinity Lutheran 11-3 with John Willmert as the winning pitcher. Grace Lutheran, in its second game of the week, defeated St. Theodore 17-7. Dave Long had four hits, including a home run and and a triple, and Kent Peterson also had four hits for Grace.
25 years ago: 1989
• Steve Brigger pitched a one-hitter for the Albert Lea VFW baseball team in its 4-0 victory against St. Cloud.
• Mike Schiltz had two hits for the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team in a 13-10 loss to Waseca.
• Awards were presented to members of the Albert Lea’s girls’ track team awards banquet. Carla Zevenbergen was the Most Improved Player. Sara Hartman and her twin sister Steph Hartman were the Most Valuable Players. Jeni Breitholtz won the Hardest Worker Award and Deb Thomas won the Most Inspirational Award.
• The Minnesota Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-2. Randy Bush homered and had two RBIs for the Twins.

• Winners in the Fountain Lake 5 were the following by age group: Men (18 and under) Woody Dahl, (19 to 29) Lee Williams, (30 to 39) Kelvin Rehnelt, (40 to 49) Scott Jacobson, (50 to 59) Gene Pacovsky and (60 and over) Jerry Sombke. Women (18 and under) Desiree Budd, (19 to 29) Anne Moore, (30 to 39) Kathy Johnson, (40 to 49) Judy Vosler-Meyer, (50 to 59) Peggy Newell and (60 and over) Georgia Sombke.
• Dan Breuer, an Albert Lea graduate and a student at Riverland Community College, finished tied for 54th place out of 102 golfers at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III tournament.
