Veterans who received damage during heavy rains and storms earlier this month may be eligible for disaster relief grants through the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.
Veterans from the 35 counties in Gov. Mark Dayton’s emergency declaration — including Freeborn, Faribault, Mower, Steele and Waseca counties — are open to apply, according to information provided by the Veterans Affairs Department.
The storms brought more than 7 inches of rain in five days, leading to flooding, tree damage and sewer backups for some Albert Lea residents.
The department will accept applications for reimbursement for expenditures dated no earlier than June 11, and work must be completed by Aug. 31.
Applications must be postmarked no later than Sept. 30.
Allowable expenditures include major appliances, building materials, cleaning supplies, construction equipment rental costs and insurance deductibles, to name a few.
Grants will be up to $1,000 for each veteran.
The grants are intended to reimburse veterans for the costs associated with the repair and recovery of their primary residence and property. Repairs made to structures that are used or designated for businesses or agricultural purposes will not be considered.
The veteran must be the owner of the property in which repairs were made or show that they were responsible for the repairs per their lease agreement.
Freeborn County Veterans Services Officer Ron Reule said people can call his office at 377-5185 to have the application emailed or faxed to them, or they can stop in at the Freeborn County Courthouse and fill it out in person.
