Memorial services for Arnold E. Helgerson, 88, of Albert Lea will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Curtis Zieske will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery with military honors accorded by the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Arnold died Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea.

Arnold Eugene Helgerson was born July 13, 1925, in Shindler, S.D., the son of Carl S. and Elsie Marie (Larson) Helgerson. He grew up and went to school there. As a 17-year-old boy, Arnie joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1942 to 1946. Following his discharge from the service he returned to South Dakota to work.

On Feb. 23, 1947, Arnold was united in marriage to Ellen Anderson in Sioux Falls, S.D. He and a younger brother came to Albert Lea some time later, where he went to work for Scotsman. Arnie worked as an auto mechanic for Motor Inn for over 30 years, retiring in the late 1980s. Following Ellen’s death, Arnie was married in 2001 to Darlene Hansen at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion. Arnie enjoyed fishing, family picnics and riding around on his three-wheeled scooter. He will be remembered most for his awesome sense of humor. Blessed be his memory.

Survivors include his children Ron (Barbara) Anderson, Joan Anderson, Jo Ann Goskeson, Wayne (Carol) Helgerson and Arnold (Robin) Helgerson Jr.; stepson, Dick (Marsha) Hansen; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchilldren; brother, Orville (Doretta) Helgerson; sisters-in-law Tillie Helgerson, Darlene Schwartz, Theresa Helgerson and Betty Helgerson; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law on his wives’ sides of the family; and many nieces and nephews.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; his wives Ellen and Darlene; his daughter, Cynthia Larson; his sisters Geraldine, Jean and Vera; and his brothers Carl Jr. “Bud,” Fredrick “Fritz,” William “Bill” and Verlyn “Dude.”
