ST. PAUL — Immigrants can continue using a convenient Twin Cities office located near a bus line to apply for green cards or take their citizenship tests.

Federal officials Tuesday abandoned plans to move the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office from its current location near the Mall of America to western Bloomington. The plan drew objections from immigration attorneys and members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation.

The new site is three miles from the nearest bus stop, which would have posed challenges for immigrants who rely on public transportation.

Officials with the General Services Administration already had signed a multi-million-dollar contract to lease the building over 10 years.

The GSA said it will find other government tenants for the building under construction, and that it will likely rebid the contract for the immigration office later this year.
