Fiery crash closes I-35

A fiery crash involving three vehicles forced the closure of northbound Interstate 35 south of Owatonna on Thursday, but the State Patrol says nobody was injured.

According to the State Patrol, a semi and a car were stopped in the right northbound lane around 3:45 p.m. Thursday due to traffic backups. Another semi crashed into the car, which then collided with the first semi. The trucks then started on fire, sending a plume of smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles.

The State Patrol listed the driver of the semi that caused the crash as Ronald A. Dickson, 32, of Homosassa, Fla. He was driving with his 7-year-old son, Aaron Dickson.

The driver of the car — a 1996 Saturn SC1 — was listed as Lani A. Manion, 32, of Mankato.

The second semi’s driver was listed as Kelly G. McCulloch, 43, of Brainerd.

People driving northbound on Interstate 35 were detoured at the Ellendale exit, then headed east on State Highway 30 to Steele County Road 45, north on County Road 45 to Highway 14 and then west on Highway 14 back to I-35. Southbound I-35 was reduced to one lane.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation was not immediately certain how long the northbound lanes would be closed. Once the accident cleared Thursday night, MnDOT opened the roadway for traffic.
