50 years ago: 1964
• The Albert Lea Colonels defeated Austin 7-5 in a Southern Minnesota League baseball game. Mike Hoffman pitched the win, and Gabby Pierce had three hits and two RBIs for the Colonels.
• The Albert Lea women’s All-Star team won a softball game over Fairmont 9-8. Alice Peterson had three hits, and Myrtle Gray homered for Albert Lea.
• In the Five-Star Legion title baseball game, New Richland won 5-4 over Wells. Winning pitcher Bruce Babcock threw a three-hitter, and Jim O’Hara had two hits for New Richland. Larry Kuster led Wells with two hits.
• In an Albert Lea City Slow Pitch game, Scotsman defeated the Melody Bar 21-9. Roy Baker was the winning pitcher and Chuck Anderson homered for Scotsman.
25 years ago: 1989
• In the St. Cloud VFW baseball tournament, Kaniewski defeated Albert Lea 6-5 in Game 1. Tom Keiting had three hits for Albert Lea. Duluth West shut out Albert Lea 2-0 in the second game. Albert Lea’s season record was 11-13, and its league record was 6-4.
• The Glenville-Emmons Legion baseball team improved to 15-4 on the season after defeating Austin 5-3. Dan Follmuth and Bill Toulouse each had two hits and one RBI for Glenville-Emmons.
• In the Green Lea Ladies Club Tournament, the top four flight winners were the following: championship flight, Michelle Harves; first flight, Marlene Overgaard; second flight, Jeanette O’Conner; Third flight, Donna Hogan.
10 years ago: 2004
• The Albert Lea Elks U13 boys’ soccer team raised its season record to 9-0-1 after a 2-0 win over Northfield. Jared Jensen and Andy Harte scored goals and Jordan DeVries was in goal for the shutout.
• The Lake Mills softball team swept a doubleheader from North Iowa for its 25th win in a row. The Bulldogs won the opener 5-1 with Mindy Bjelland as the winning pitcher and Melissa Brackey leading the offense with two hits. Molly Nelson had three hits in the Bulldogs’ 11-5 victory in the second game. Lake Mills had a 26-3 overall record and a 10-1 mark in the North Iowa Conference.
