MINNEAPOLIS — Friends and family are mourning the death of a 15-year-old boy who drowned in Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis.
Approximately 100 people attended a vigil for Sha-kym Adams on Thursday near the lake. Hennepin County authorities said he was swimming with six other teens Wednesday morning after football practice on the lake’s east side.
They said the teens had swum to a floating dock and Adams was swimming toward then when he called out for help. He went under and failed to surface. His body was recovered about two hours later.
The beach wasn’t staffed by lifeguards at the time.
Minneapolis South High School football team members released 15 balloons during the vigil. The team’s booster club is raising money to help Adams’ family with expenses.
