He is a grain farmer and owns his own audio production company. In his free time, he said he enjoys going for rides in the family’s Model T Ford, doing research on the Internet, volunteering at the Brick Hall near Myrtle and working outdoors to eliminate invasive weeks.

He said he enjoys seeing efficient governing and seeing departments run well.

“I believe in public service, have been and will continue to be a voice for the people of Freeborn County,” Belshan said.

Known as one of the most vocal commissioners on the board, he said he is not afraid to ask questions or research an issue. He noted people call from all over the county about problems because they know he will return their calls and try to help them to the best of his ability.

“I represent the public,” he said.

Looking ahead, Belshan said he thinks the biggest issue facing the county is maintaining core services of public of safety, roads and health without repressive taxes.

In addition to infrastructure concerns, he said the county is facing cost increases of hundreds of thousands of dollars because of Obamacare requirements, a discontinuation of dispatching funding from the city and state aid highways that are not keeping up with costs.

“Our job as commissioners will be balancing needs and wants and coming up with creative ways to stretch funding without unduly raising taxes,” he said.
