Joke in Sunday paper was cheap

After reading the Sunday Albert Lea Tribune, I feel compelled to write to express my profound disappointment and sadness at the choice of jokes in the section entitled Humor. Our community has many people working to overcome some of the atrocities of our society, most specifically, coming together to focus on the need for kindness, civility and respect.

The joke of which I am speaking referred to “wives (who don’t speak) are hard to find.” A bright spot, however, appeared two pages later in a notice of an event sponsored by the Choose Civility initiative, one which lifts up the voices of children, women and men who have been silenced. The Albert Lea community can be leaders in supporting kindness and respect for all people — and this can start with every word that is spoken, written and even anticipated. Thank you.
