Freeborn High School class of 1951 reunion
The Freeborn High School class of 1951 had a reunion Sept. 6 at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club. Thirteen classmates and their spouses were at the get-together. The classmates were Russell Anderson, Donna Christenson, Audrey Davis, Lois Ann Erickson, Bernard Igmaszewski, Lois Jordahl, Margaret Knudson, Katie Koziolek, Dorothy Oakland, Dolores Lee, Sylvia Pyzick, Don Schroeder and Alice Tukua.
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 56
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 56 of Albert Lea met at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 in the Legion dining room. President Bonnie Schneider opened the meeting. Carol Smith offered opening prayer. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was said, one stanza of the national anthem was sung and the preamble to the ALA was recited. Secretary Ange Larson read the minutes of the June meeting. Treasurer Deanne Adams gave her report.
Children and Youth chairwoman Karen Cibert announced that $600 worth of school supplies was delivered to Brookside for distribution to students in elementary education that needed them. Her next project is healthy kids snacks. Donations can be dropped off at the American Legion Post, 146 N. Broadway, by Nov. 15. A box is available. She will then deliver them to Brookside for distribution. Please continue to save pop tabs, milk moolah, soup labels and education box tops. They can be brought to the club anytime.
The Veterans Administration Hospital is in need of 45-by-60-inch lap robes and neck pillows. Carol Smith was given $200 to purchase neck pillow. These items, along with shampoo and soap from motels, can be brought to the club.
National Security chairwoman Betty Anderson would like coupons saved to send overseas to the troops. These can also be brought to the club.
Recommendations from the board were voted on and approved as follows: VA Gift Shop, Operation Military Kids, $5 Bill Shower and Forgotten Kids.
Correspondence was read.
Installation of officers for 2015 was held. Joyce Olson conducted the ceremony. Installed officers were Schneider, president; Maureen Stiehl, first vice; Pat Hough, second vice; Ange Larson, secretary; Deanne Adams, treasurer; Jenny Torgerson, chaplain; Janet Scherb, sergeant at arms; Carol Olson, historian; and Smith and Cibert, executive board.
Pianist Lucy Gripentrog led in singing “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You, Dear Hearts and Gentle People.”
Tuesday is American Legion Day in Minnesota. The fall conference will be Oct. 24-25 at Shooting Star Hotel and Casino in Mahnomen.
The fundraiser Aug. 31 was a success. The next one will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 30. Please support the Auxiliary and the veteran, youth scholarships and community programs.
The quarter drawing was won by Ange Larson.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 5.
Lunch was served by Schneider and Smith.
Smith led in closing prayer.
One verse of “God Bless America” was sung.
The meeting was adjourned.
TOPS Minnesota 979
The TOPS Minnesota Chapter 979 announces its June and July winners. Division winners were Judy Thorson, Marlys Steele, Fern Rockwell, Loretta Wacholz and Katie Koziolek.
Quarterly winners were Caroline Sorenson, Lois Goodnature and Keith Porter.
Four-week winners were Ruth Thompson and Katie Koziolek.
KOPS in Black were Peggy Indrelie, Ardus Sanderson, Doris Baer, Nancy Jenson and Elayne Wichmann. Two-year KOPS was Ardus Sanderson.
