Ruth Ardella Winkelman was born Dec. 10, 1928, on the family farm near Northwood, the daughter of Soren and Christine (Ellingson) Loland. Ruth was baptized March 10, 1929, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on March 12, 1943, at Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood. Ruth attended the Hartland rural country school until the fifth-grade and then attended the Northwood Community School.

Prior to her marriage, she worked for the local grocery stores in Northwood.

She was united in marriage to Richard “Tex” Winkelman on May 14, 1948, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle and to this marriage three children were born, Wanda, Mike and Bonnie. Richard preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1985.

Ruth loved being a stay-at-home mother, loving and caring for her family. She enjoyed vegetable gardening, tending to her flowers, loved all outdoor activities and cooking — where she made everything from scratch.  She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood and the church circle.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children Wanda (Raymond) Hoffman, Mike Winkelman and Bonnie Olson, all of Northwood; her grandchildren Jennifer (Dan) Willand, Luke Hoffman, Nick (Ashley) Olson and Nichole (Justin) Hoelscher; her great-grandchildren Damion and Izaiah Hoelscher, Lukas Hoelscher, Devon Olson, Quinzey Praska, Jazzmine, Zoie, and Paizley Olson and Ian and Alexander Willand; sisters-in-law Lillian Loland of Toterville and Betty Winkelman of Jacksonville, Fla.; as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard “Tex”; brothers Stanley and Jacob Loland; sisters Margaret Brunsvold and Dora Dahl; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Judy Winkelman.
