50 years ago: 1964
• Lake Mills, with Bruce Peterson and Dean Trytten scoring touchdowns, won its opening football game 12-7 over Manly.
• MVPs were named in each softball league in Albert Lea. Slowpitch League: Dave Elvabek, Albert Lea Federal; Fastpitch League: Ken Heine, Trades and Labor; Church League American Division: Ray Weitzel; Church League National Division: Bob Weber; Women’s League: Myrtle Gray, Northside Mobil.
• The Albert Lea football team was defeated by Owatonna 26-14. Dave Mueller and Terry Gilbertson scored for the Tigers, and Noel Jenke led Owatonna with two touchdowns.
• The Northwood football team evened its record at 1-1 with a 13-0 win over Osage. Orville Hogan intercepted a pass and ran for a 16-yard touchdown for the Vikings.
25 years ago: 1989
• The Albert Lea football team remained undefeated at 3-0 after defeating Mankato East 21-15. Leading rushers for the Tigers were Chad Bohonek with 119 yards on 15 carries, Shane Arett with 107 yards on 17 carries and John Ball with 39 yards on five carries.
• The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Austin 3-1 by scores of 15-13, 15-13, 13-15 and 15-5. Pam Stoltz had nine ace hits, and Jill Johnson had eight for the Tigers.
• The Alden-Conger-Freeborn volleyball team shut out Wells-Easton 3-0 by scores of 15-8, 15-2 and 15-8. Emmy Steen was 17-of-18, and Lani Davis 14-of-16 serving for Alden-Conger-Freeborn.
10 years ago: 2004
• The Albert Lea football team defeated Winona 34-7 for its first home win since 1997. Scoring touchdowns for the Tigers were Corey Kuipers, 2, Mike Honeycutt, Corey Berggren and Ryan Truesdell.
• The Aragon/Double Play/Miken team from Albert Lea won the 2004 Minnesota state title in men’s Class CC slowpitch softball. Team members were Kris Johannsen, Matt Schonrock, Rick Bauer, Craig Barslou, Brad Carlson, Jason Lloyd, Aaron Phillips, Tom Fath, Derrick Bauer, Ryan Long, Wade Barslou, Kevin Alert and Chris Sorenson, the tournament’s MVP.
