The Governor’s Civil War Commemoration Task Force, the Cannon Valley Civil War Roundtable and the Rice County Historical Society will host a remembrance event that will include commemoration ceremonies honoring Rice County’s Michael Cook, major in the 10th Minnesota Infantry, who was mortally wounded on Dec. 16, 1864, while leading a charge at the Battle of Nashville in Tennessee.
Major Cook was a territorial and state senator and the highest ranking soldier in the Civil War returned to Minnesota for burial. Cook County in northeast Minnesota is named for him. The event will include dedication ceremonies of a new grave maker by Civil War re-enactors and present day military units, presentations by state and local dignitaries and historians on the Battle of Nashville and the life of Major Cook.
This event is part of sesquicentennial ceremonies to commemorate and remember the participation of all Minnesota Civil War soldiers by honoring the memories of the 20 soldiers of over 800 who died in battle and were returned for burial in Minnesota.
The event will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Faribault and is open to the public. The cemetery is at 2900 Second Ave. NW. The event will be held rain or shine. Free will lunch will follow the event. Visit mncivilwar150.com for more information.
