The Minnesota Department of Transportation’s snowplow operators in southeastern Minnesota began their winter preparedness meetings this week as they continue training for their winter work.
The meetings began Tuesday in Owatonna and continue through next Wednesday in Dresbach. It’s part of the ongoing training and information that drivers utilize before they attack the first season’s snowfall. Drivers meet in Rochester today, Stewartville Friday, Winona Tuesday and Dresbach Wednesday.
During the meetings, drivers get updates on the shop and facilities, pre- and post-trip inspection requirements, safety refreshers, policies and updates on salt usage and solutions used on the roads. New drivers also get hands-on reviews with the trucks.
MnDOT District 6 has 204 snow plow drivers, who operate 102 snow plows during the winter. The personnel gives MnDOT capabilities to snow plows on the road around the clock.
“One of MnDOT’s hallmarks is training, and these sessions give us a chance to get the operators up to speed on new developments and remind them of the safety and care they need to take in doing their jobs for the public,” said Wes Smith, MnDOT maintenance superintendent for MnDOT District 6’s west side.
One update is in terminology used for MnDOT’s driving conditions map, 511mn.org. The new terms are more user-friendly: normal, partially covered, completely covered, travel not advised and closed.
“Our drivers take their responsibilities for the safety of motorists on the roads very seriously and we want to make sure they’re well-trained and ready to get behind the wheel when the first snow flies,” said Tim Zierden, MnDOT maintenance superintendent for MnDOT District 6’s east side.
