50 years ago: 1964
• The Albert Lea football team was defeated by the Mankato Scarlets 26-13. Terry Gilbertson and Doyle Freemyer scored the touchdowns for the Tigers.
• Rookie Tony Oliva of the Minnesota Twins won the American League batting title with an average of .323. He led the American League with 217 hits and 43 doubles.
• Behind Jimmie Hall’s 25th and Don Mincher’s 23rd home runs and the five-hit pitching of Jim Grant, the Minnesota Twins defeated Kansas City 6-1.
• In a North Iowa Conference football game, Northwood defeated Lake Mills 12-7. Edward Dahlby, a lineman for the Bulldogs, intercepted a pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown. Dick Holstad scored on a 47-yard run for the Vikings.
25 years ago: 1989
• Dan Johnson, a fifth grader from Albert Lea, took first place in sparring and third place in form in the Black Belt Pee Wee Division at the Midwestern States Karate Championships held in Albert Lea.
• The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Faribault 3-0 by scores of 15-3, 15-0 and 15-12. Jill Johnson, Pam Stoltz and Chris Hillman each had four ace hits for Albert Lea.
• Shannon Froendt ran for 134 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns for Glenville-Emmons in its 28-14 football win over Bethlehem Academy.
• NRHEG defeated Waterville-Elysian 3-1 by scores of 15-6, 12-15, 15-12 and 15-5. Ann Felshim had 13 serving points and three ace serves for NRHEG.
10 years ago: 2004
• United South Central won the Gopher Valley Tennis Championship. Winning singles titles for USC were Rebecca Leland at No. 1, Kate Ostrowski at No. 2 and Cassie Wood at No. 4. Winning doubles titles were Danielle Huper and Erin Allis at No. 1, Marie Halvorson and Kim Staloch at No. 2 and Ashley Wermedal and Kallie Rollenhagen at No. 3.
• Tyler Ziebel and Caleb Claussen scored touchdowns for Glenville-Emmons in a 14-8 victory over Alden-Conger. Ryan Wach scored on a kickoff return for Alden-Conger.
