50 years ago: 1964

• The Lake Mills boys basketball team improved to 2-1 in the North Iowa Conference after defeating Northwood 64-55. The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Steve Pederson with 19 points and 13 rebounds, Bob Lande with 18 points and Tom Moen with 13 points and 23 rebounds.

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference football team from Albert Lea were Dave Mueller, Jim Bratvold and Robert Posthumus. Receiving All-Conference honorable mention were Terry Gilbertson, Steve Westrum and Bernie Drenth.

• The Albert Lea wrestling team opened the season with a 27-19 win over Bloomington. Winners for the Tigers were Mark Allen at 95 pounds, Bob Hatch at 112, Ken Stauch at 120, Gary Neist at 133, Ken Stencel at 145, Bob Severson at 154 and Tom Countryman at 175.

• Jeff Miller scored 25 points and Larry Sonnek, 10, to lead Wells to a season-opening 56-49 win over Blooming Prairie.

 

25 years ago: 1989 

• Albert Lea graduates Stephani Hartman finished in 41st place, and her twin sister, Sara, finished in 67th place at the NCAA Division II national cross country championships.

• Albert Lea offensive lineman Pete Christian was named to the Minnesota All-State academic football team.

• The Minnesota Gophers football team defeated Iowa 43-7 to finish the season with a 6-5 record and a Big Ten mark of 4-4. Darrell Thompson ran for 122 yards and threw a 14-yard touchdown for the Gophers.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• Named to the Tribune’s All-Area volleyball team from Lake Mills were Jennie Finer, Lacey Mathews and Megan Pederson; from NRHEG were Alison Anderson and Emily Haugen and from Glenville-Emmons was Jordan Claussen.

• The No. 3 Albert Lea wrestling team defeated No. 2 Simley 32-29. Winning matches for the Tigers were Logan Kortan, Beau Hansen, Nate Granahan, Zach McGinnis, Brandon Klukow, Alex Paul and Ben Berhow.

• The Alden-Conger girls’ basketball team defeated Martin Luther 45-34. Leading the Knights were Emily Appel with 14 points, 17 rebounds and 16 blocked shots and Danielle Jensen with 19 points.
