BRITTON, S.D. — Officials expect to recover about half of the grain after a 40,000-bushel grain bin collapsed at an elevator in northeastern South Dakota.
The bin at the Wheaton Dumont Co-op elevator in Britton developed a leak halfway up and collapsed Sunday afternoon.
CEO Philip Deal said leak led to the bin zipping open, covering a rail yard. He said the collapse also destroyed conveyors and other overhead equipment.
He said half of the spring wheat should be recoverable.
Wheaton Dumont has elevators in 10 communities and agronomy centers in four communities in South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota.
Britton is 43 miles northeast of Aberdeen.
