Lois Welsh, 1921-2014

Lois Jean (Robb) Welsh, 93, of Northwood, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, at Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway St. in Manly, with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First St. N. in Northwood. The family has suggested that those wishing to give a memorial may wish to consider Lutheran Retirement Home Ladies Auxiliary or Meals on Wheels in Northwood.
Lois Jean (Robb) Welsh was born May 16, 1921, in Marshalltown, the daughter of John Clarence Porter and Jesse (Raber) Robb. Lois graduated from Marshalltown High School and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in art and history education at UNI in Cedar Falls and completed her graduate work in education at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
Lois taught history and art in Des Moines for seven years and was the art instructor at Northwood-Kensett Community School from 1963 until 1983.
She was united in marriage to Dr. Maurice Welsh Dec. 27, 1951, in Marshalltown. He preceded her in death Oct. 4, 1995. The family moved to Northwood in 1953, where they raised their four children who went into the health professions.
Lois loved Christmas, creating art, textiles, clothing and fashion, Iowa Hawkeye Football, reading, teaching and learning new things, traveling, golfing and especially her family. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Alter Guild in Manly, Iowa Education Association, MacNider Art Museum and Northwood Town and Country Club.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children Cris (Laurence) Wells of Peoria, Ariz., Gayle (Robert) King of Green Valley, Ariz., and James Welsh and special friend, Val Thomas, of Northwood; daughter-in-law, Carol Welsh, of Hereford, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Maurissa (Jonathan) Mattson of Phoenix, Lauren (Joseph) Wilkes of Phoenix, Nicole (Shane) Hall of Hereford, Ariz., Roslyn (Chris) Bouchikas of Hereford, Ariz., Caitlin King of Paradise Valley, Ariz., Robert M. King Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz., Ryan Patrick King of Tucson, Ariz., and Kelli Welsh of Fargo, N.D.; six great-grandchildren, Layla and Liam Mattson, Jackson and Joanna Wilkes and Weston and Wyatt Bouchikas; as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Maurice Welsh; brother, Jess Robb; sister, Maxine Philipps; and son, John Patrick Welsh.
