50 years ago: 1964

• The Minnesota Gophers defeated Utah State 88-69 in a pre-regular season basketball game. Leading the Gophers were Lou Hudson with 33 points, Dennis Dvoracek, 14, and Don Yates, 12.

• Doyle Freemyer scored three goals to lead the Albert Lea hockey team to its fourth consecutive win, a 5-2 victory over Minneapolis Vocational. Also scoring goals for the Tigers were Mark Jacobson and Chris Durgin.

25 years ago: 1989

• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team shut out Robbinsdale Cooper 8-0. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Jason Studier, two, Kyle Thomas, Chad Cliff, Todd Intihar, Chad Hacker, Todd Williamschen and Justin Matson.

• The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team was defeated by Austin Pacelli 67-56 in a tournament at Austin High School. Pam Stoltz scored 32 points for Albert Lea.

• Named to the National Football League Pro Bowl team’s roster from the Minnesota Vikings were Chris Doleman, Keith Millard, Carl Lee, Joey Browner, Gary Zimmerman, Randall McDaniel and Steve Jordan.

• The Minnesota Vikings won the NFC Central Division title with a 29-21 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Kicker Rich Karlis made 5-of-6 field goals for the Vikes. The Vikings had six sacks in the game and had a regular-season total of 71 sacks.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• Laura Hillman scored two goals and Amy Leach had one for the Albert Lea girls’ in its 3-2 overtime victory over New Ulm. The Tigers were 5-3 in the Big Nine Conference.

• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team raised its season record to 10-1 after defeating Mankato East 6-3. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Jon Breuer, Peter Bracker, Quinn Ellingson, Beau Larson, Alex Lair and Tony Dugstad.

• In a girls’ basketball holiday tournament, Albert Lea defeated Farmington 52-38. Niki Hendrickson scored 13 points and Ellie Holmen, 10, for Albert Lea. The Tigers evened their season record at 4-4.
