WINONA — Dozens of people who attended the burial service for a Vietnam veteran in Winona never had a chance to meet the man.
Richard Rhodes died alone in his downtown Winona apartment about a week before Christmas. No family or friends could be found. The 73-year-old man left no will.
A local funeral home took charge of Rhodes’ body and learned that he had served in the Army during the 1960s. Hoff Funeral Home contacted area posts of Veterans of Foreign Wars hoping that other veterans would attend Monday’s burial.
More than 100 people attended the graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery where Rhodes was given full military honors.
