MINNEAPOLIS — Federal prosecutors have charged a Minnesota woman with defrauding an insurance company of $2 million in her ex-husband’s staged death.

Forty-seven-year-old Irina Vorotinov of Plymouth and her 25-year-old son, Alkon, who is accused of concealing the scheme, appeared Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

According to the complaint, Igor Vorotinov bought a life insurance policy from Mutual of Omaha in April 2010 and listed Irina and Alkon as beneficiaries.

In October 2011, police in Moldova were called about a body. Irina identified the body as her former husband, then returned to Minnesota and filed a death claim.

But according to court documents, Alkon was stopped in Detroit in 2013, and photos on his computer showed Igor was still alive.

It was not immediately clear if the mother and son have attorneys.
