WELCH — Authorities say a single-engine plane was pulled from North Lake after it went through the ice near Welch.
The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office said the pilot was able to escape after the nose of the plane went underwater late Friday afternoon. The pilot had just dropped off an ice fisherman in the remote backwaters of the Mississippi River and was about to head to Hastings to pick up his next passenger.
Sgt. Scott Powers of the sheriff’s office said the pilot was getting ready to take off from the ice when it fell through.
The pilot, who’s from the Hastings area, wasn’t injured.
Recovery teams used an all-terrain vehicle to pull the plane from the water Saturday morning.
The sheriff’s office and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident.
